RAINY NIGHT IN TALLIN by Ludwig Göransson, Tenet Soundtrack. (Spotify)
Göransson’s synth beats drive Christopher Nolan’s time-bending thriller. My favorite track sets the tone in the first scene, featuring a black-ops infiltration of a swat-team response to a terrorist attack at Kyiv’s opera house (yes, it’s a confusing movie). It’s fantastic for steady, grinding efforts. We live in a twilight world. And there are no friends at dusk.
Göransson has become one of my favorite film composers. He met Ryan Coogler while they were both at USC’s film school and he has scored every movie made by the Oakland-born filmmaker. You can get a sense of Göransson’s approach in this episode of Song Exploder, where he breaks down the “Killmonger” track in Marvel’s Black Panther.
