I took a run last weekend up Oakland's Sausal Creek in the Dimond Canyon. In 1939, the Works Progress Administration, an employment and infrastructure agency created as part of the New Deal, began work to mitigate erosion along the creek—part of a larger effort to turn the canyon into a recreation area. You can still find WPA time stamps in numerous places, a reminder that even the worst economic and political circumstances can lead to lasting social improvement.
