Good evening!
The Oakland Running Festival is this Sunday. Featuring a new (and controversial) course that laps around downtown, the marathon will venture into the Port of Oakland and the town's western neighborhoods. While the new course cuts out the wealthy suburbs of Rockridge and Montclair, it runs through neighborhoods that epitomize the East Bay's changing economy, demographics, and housing structures.
Central and West Oakland is ground zero for tensions over housing and urban gentrification, while also serving as home to the most vibrant sectors and workers in the American economy. Though not quite as scenic, the course will be a faster, and perhaps more authentic, tour of the city.
